Stretching: Not only does stretching help with physical health, but it also seems to give a boost to mental health. Stress can cause muscles to become tense, which in turn causes muscles to tighten, leading to discomfort and chronic pain. Stretching reduces the muscle tension, thereby reversing the cycle of tension, tightening, and pain. Stretching has been shown to increase serotonin levels — i.e., the hormone that helps stabilize our mood, reduce stress, and overall makes us feel good — which causes a decrease in depression and anxiety.

Walking: Walking can help relieve stress. Walking gives you time to think, as well as time to get away from stressors. Getting out of a stressful environment, breathing the air, and feeling your body move is natural stress-relief. Research has shown that walking promotes the release of brain chemicals called endorphins that stimulate relaxation and improved our mood

If you are feeling stressed, take a few minutes out of your day come and try some of the cool stretches in our stretching area. Or get that stress free walk on our treadmills with scenic routes or a morning/evening walk on our 5th floor outdoor track.
